Micro Review on Vijay in Jos Alukkas ad

It is long since Vijay acted in a Television commercial. Last time he did, it was for Coke or Coca cola where the song was an instant hit also with the screen presence of Vijay who danced with enough number of dancers. This time, it is a one man show for Jos Alukkas.

Vijay looks the same as he did a decade ago. He looks as if he came fresh from the sets of SJ Suryah’s Vijay-Jyothika starrer ‘Kushi’. So, what is it in the Jos Alukkas ad featuring Vijay? The timeframe is less than 1:25 minutes or 85 seconds. Still, there is an attempt at narrating a story, with only very few words uttered and Vijay speaking nothing.

White, grey and black hues with the cars lining up to mean a well established goliath; dressed in a lounge suit of a jacket with slight informal attire; patting his car driver’s shoulders to stop by the school in which he studied. Men clad in safari suit rush up to flank him as he alights. The business goliath walks by his school seeing the old traditional gong hanging at the end of the long corridor.
Smile on his face as he relives a moment where the gong was hit and students left for the day assuming the signal meant them to leave. An angry headmaster walks with a baton and the watchman pleads that he did not hit the gong but the guilt-ridden young Vijay admits his mischief. The watchman’s job is saved.

Vijay gets into his car leaving the watchman with a ‘gold ring’. The contented watchman bears a smile on his face. ‘Idhu Thangamana Uravu’ says a voice over drawing the ad to a close. There are a few things well expressed such as the headmaster dropping his truncheon as he knows it is (the young) Vijay who did it, meaning that he was a good student.

The watchman also tries to conceal the fact that Vijay was the prankster due to his being a good student, and hence his pleading. But then, ‘You are the real hero,” does not make sense at all. The attempt at a complete visual communication would not go well with the laymen. The guards flank Vijay in a relaxed manner although with some urgency. Vijay speaks with his eyes, very subtle and shows his maturity in acting. His good looks are retained for this ad unlike his films. The BGM is mild and subtle. Cinematic rules are well utilized as the students leave the school. Their coming back towards the angry headmaster is shown by their feet running towards the audience.

As you see the ad for the first time, you may not understand its usage of screenplay and visual techniques but as you watch again and again, you will connect with its emotions. Subliminal, visual, aesthetic and emotional – this Jos Alukkas ad strikes the right ‘gong!’
